ஆசா ப்ரதீசேஷ ஸங்கதம் ஸூந்ருதாம் ச இஷ்டாபூர்தே புத்ரபசூம்ச்ச ஸ்ர்வான் |
ஏதத் வ்ருங்க்தே புருஷஸ்யால்பாமேதே ஸயஸ்யானச்னன் வஸதி ப்ராஹ்மனோ க்ருஹே || -( கடோபநிஷத்- 1.1.8)
āśā-pratīkṣe saṁgataṁ sῡnṛtāṁ ceṣṭāpῡrte putra-paśῡṁś ca sarvān
etad vṛṅkte puruṣasyālpamedhaso yasyānaśnan vasati brāhmaṇo gṛhe.

பொருள் : யாருடைய வீட்டில் தூயவன் ஒருவன் உணவின்றி இருக்க நேர்கிறதோ, அற்ப
புத்தி உடையவனான அவனது நம்பிக்கைகள், எதிர்ப்பார்ப்புகள் எல்லாம்
அழிகின்றன. தான் செய்த புண்ணியங்களின் பலன், இனிய பேச்சின் பலன், யாகங்கள்
வழிபாடு போன்றவற்றின் பலன், நற்பணிகளின் பலன் அனைத்தையும் அவன் இழக்கிறான்.
அவனது பிள்ளைச் செல்வம், கால்நடைச் செல்வம் அனைத்தும் அழிகின்றன.
தூயவன் ஒருவன் வீட்டிற்கு வந்தால் அவனை உபசரிக்க வேண்டியது கடமை என்பதை இந்த மந்திரம் உணர்த்துகிறது. உபசரிக்காவிட்டால் எல்லா செல்வமும் அழியும். அதேவேளையில், உபசரித்து அவர்களின் மனம் கனிந்த ஆசிகளைப் பெற்றால் செல்வம் அனைத்தும் சேரும் என்பது உணர்த்தப்படுகிறது.
Meaning : “Of the person in whose house a guest starves, is not being given, even when asked for; of that person, the guest goes away taking all virtues and merits, and also the lives of all his children and cows; all these are destroyed.”
When God is turned out of a house, anything can happen, is what is suggested by this. There is a beautiful story in the Chhandogya Upanishad, of a poor man who went for alms. When people refused him, he asked: “Do you know to whom you are refusing to give? To the Universal Prana!” They were frightened to hear this, and called him back and offered alms. The spiritual man is a godly man; a saint is a divine person. And hence, the atithi who is coming either to bless you or to test you may go away, taking everything of yours, if you turn a deaf ear to him.
When Yama returned to his abode, his courtiers told him: “Lord, a guest has come; an uninvited guest. Who is more important than he! He is God who has come as the universal fire.” Yama answered: “Please him. Let him not burn; give him water!”
